Over these first three days of school today the children and I have been getting to know each other. The aim of these initial days was mainly to help the children familiarise themselves with the classroom and school routines – lining up, eating routines, circle time and so on. We did topic work, crafts and today started working on our workbooks but again my main concern was helping them learn the dynamics of the day at school. I have been trying out new routines to deal with the new way things are being done in Pre-Junior and also making changes so that they are better suited to the temperament of the individuals in the class.
In class we have been talking about Starting School because we have nor grown up. We have read some back to school stories – There was an Old Lady who Swallowed some Book on orientation, the Kissing hand and Spot goes to School. Today we read the book of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to introduce the topic of growing up and the idea that when we grow older, we can do more things than when we were young. In the coming days the children will be looking at each other’s photos showing how they have grown since when they were babies.
As soon as things settle down a bit, I will set up a page on the e learning site with links to all the stories we have been reading in class and possibly some of the activities.
